ONS Releases Latest Baby Name Report

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has released their annual report for the most popular baby names in 2015. Below you’ll find a summary of all the findings for your reading pleasure!

Once again, Amelia and Oliver were the most popular given names for babies born in England and Wales in 2015.

“Amelia and Oliver remained the most popular names for baby girls and boys born in 2015, having held the top spot since 2011 and 2013 respectively,” said Elizabeth McLaren of the Vital Statistics Outputs Branch of the ONS.

Ella, which was last in the top 10 list in 2007, has shot up to number 6, while Noah has also broken through into the list after increasing steadily in popularity over the years.

A popular trend in the past few years has been to revamp traditional names with a new spelling in order to inject some modernity into them. This is reflected in some of the boys and girls names that have made it into the top 100 list in 2015, such as Jaxon for boys and Maddison for girls.

The top 10 names for both boys and girls are as follows:

TOP GIRLS’ NAMES IN 2015

1) Amelia

2) Olivia

3) Emily

4) Isla

5) Ava

6) Ella

7) Jessica

8) Isabella

9) Mia

10) Poppy

TOP BOYS’ NAMES IN 2015

1) Oliver

2) Jack

3) Harry

4) George

5) Jacob

6) Charlie

7) Noah

8) William

9) Thomas

10) Oscar

A strong royal name theme is seen in the boy’s names, with three of the princes’ names represented (Harry, George and William) but that’s not the case with the girls (Charlotte is number 25, Elizabeth is number 39 and Catherine isn’t even in the top 100, sliding in at 263. Kate is even lower, at 393!)

These findings are promising for BabyNames.co.uk’s predictions for the most popular baby names of 2017. Check out the infographic we made HERE!
