Baby name regret: it is the one thing that parents absolutely dreads and hopes will never happen to them. Every parent wants to think that the name they picked for their child is perfect in every way and that it suits their child’s personality. However, that sometimes doesn’t happen. You look at your child and you think, ‘That’s not your name,’ and the regret sets in.
Has that happened to you? If it has, you’re definitely not alone. A survey conducted by Mumsnet has revealed that in their pool of 1,362 parents, a whopping 18% have baby name regret.
Some parents said the regret came six weeks after the birth, while others said it arrived when their child started nursery.
Judging by the list of most commonly regretted baby names, it seems that a few of them are in the Office of National Statistics’ (ONS) top 10 list. Amelia is number 1 on that list, Emily is number 3 and Charlotte, while not making the top 10, was placed at number 25.
As for boys, Jack is number 2 on the ONS list, Jacob is number 5, Thomas is number 9 and Oscar is number 10. Clearly, an element of many parents’ baby name regret stems from their name choice being too common.
