Christmas is in just a few days and to drum up some festive cheer here at Babynames.co.uk, we are going to look at a few famous figures who were born on Christmas Day!
Sir Isaac Newton
Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist born in 1643 and died 31st March 1727. He was recognised as one of the most important scientists of all time. Newton was best known for his development of the theory of gravity, which later became the basics of physics (and of course, there is the famous story involving him and an apple.) Although Newton was born Christmas Day, technically he could be disqualified from our list – England switched to the Georgian calendar in 1752, which means Newton was born on January 4th!
Humphrey Bogart
American actor Humphrey Bogart was best known for his roles in several iconic 1940s film noir, including “The Maltese Falcon” and “Casablanca.” The actor was born on 25th December 1899 and died in 1957. To this day, he remains one of America’s cultural icons.
Humphrey Bogart was married to Lauren Bacall, and they had two children together, whom they both named after characters from their movies – their son, Steve was named after Bogart’s character in “To Have and Have Not,” while their daughter Leslie was named after Bogart’s friend and co-star, Leslie Howard.
Sissy Spacek
Sissy Spacek was actually born Mary Elizabeth Spacek. She is an American actress and singer born in 1949. She broke into the film industry by staring in “Badlands” in 1973 but is probably most remembered for playing the titular character in the 1976 horror film, “Carrie,” based on Stephen King’s book. She won an Oscar for best actress for her role in the 1980 film “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Sissy is actually a nickname given to her by her brothers when she was growing up and has now become her stage name ever since.
Annie Lennox
The famous Scottish singer was born on Christmas Day, 1954. Before she went on to have a successful solo career, she was on half of the 1980s pop band, Eurythmics. Annie Lennox went solo in 1992 and she has won eight Brit Awards, including Best British Female Artist six times, which is more than any other female artist. Because of this, she has been called the “Brits Champion of Champions.”
The cherry on top is that she has even been approved by The Queen! She received an OBE in 2011 for her charitable efforts. Not to mention she has also sung in the closing ceremony for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Justin Trudeau
Justin Trudeau is perhaps one of the world’s most popular political figures – young, good looking and saavy with social media, he is definitely Canada’s coolest Prime Minister. Even before he was elected in October 2015, Trudeau already has ties to politics as his father was Canada’s Prime Minister in 1980. The fact that he was born on Christmas Day, 1971 just makes him even cooler!
Dido
Most people know her as Dido, but her full name is actually Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong (what a mouthful! Say that ten times fast…) Everyone agreed that calling her “Dido” was probably the best way to go. The name actually came from childhood nicknames she and her brother had – she was called Dido, and he was called Rollo. Dido is now her real name, not merely just a stage name, and of course, refers to the mythical Queen of Carthage.
The British singer was born on Christmas Day in 1971 and in the footsteps of Paddington (and The Queen), she celebrates two birthdays – Christmas Day and June 25th.
While she is probably most remembered for her songs in the early 2000s, Dido was also ecently nominated for an Academy Award for her song “If I Rise” for Danny Boyle’s film, “127 Hours.”
Jorgie Porter
Soap actress Jeorgie Porter, best known for her role as Theresa McQueen in “Hollyoaks,” a role she played from 2008-2016. She was born on Christmas Day,1987. She also took part in last year’s “I’m a Celebrity …Get me Out of Here!” although she didn’t quite make it to the final and was voted out during the semi-finals. Jorgie is a modern spin on the traditional unisex name, Georgie.
