We recently wrote a baby name list for short baby names, so we have decided to make one for long baby names as well! These names all have three or more syllables and would be perfect for balancing out a short, one syllable last name. Below are some of our favourite long baby names.
An Old Roman name of uncertain origin. It could derive from Antonius, a popular Latin name which itself is thought to have spawned from Adonis, an ancient Greek god. A common shortening of this name is Tony.
A simplified form of the Latin feminine form of Christian. It means ‘follower of Christ.’
Popular among early Christians who wanted to honour Christ with a personal link, Christopher is a name that largely rose in popularity in the 16th century.
Demetrius is a Greek name meaning ‘Follower of Demeter,’ Demeter is the goddess of the harvest. The name Demetrius appears in a number of William Shakespeare’s plays, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
From Elisabet, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Elisheva. The name was made popular by Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century and is still favoured by royals.
The Italian form of Frances, Francesca originally existed as a word for ‘French’ and still carries its meaning of ‘from France.’
Gabrielle is the feminine equivalent of the biblical name Gabriel and means ‘strength in God.’
Gregory comes from a Greek word meaning ‘sentry.’ It was introduced to England by St Gregory the Great and has been a popular boy’s name since the Norman Conquest.
Leopold is a name of German origin. The name comes from the German words ‘liut’ meaning ‘people’ and ‘bold’ meaning ‘brave.’ Then ‘liut’ was altered to the Latin ‘leo.’
Susanna is the New Testament form of ‘Shoshana’, from the word meaning ‘lily’, which in modern Hebrew also means ‘rose’. It carries connotations of purity and as the lily is a Christian symbol this name is popular with Christian parents.
