After a decade spent toiling on series television, mostly in roles easily forgotten, actor George Clooney shot to stardom with his portrayal of charming but troubled pediatrician Doug Ross on the acclaimed medical series “ER.” Thanks to his newfound celebrity, Clooney made the jump to films while still on the series, quickly establishing himself as a major Hollywood player with leading roles in “From Dusk Till Dawn,” “Batman & Robin,” and “Out of Sight.” Via Old French and Latin, comprised of words meaning ‘earth’ and ‘to work’, George became popular as a name when George I became King of England in 1714.
