About Martha Hudson

Go back to names list

While Mrs. Hudson (played by Una Stubbs) did not have a first name in the Conan Doyle books, she is called Martha in the television series. Mrs. Hudson is the landlady of 221B Baker Street and rented the flat to Sherlock after he helped ensure that her husband, who ran a drug cartel, was executed for a double murder in Florida. It is revealed that Sherlock cares deeply for her as a sort of mother-figure, as evidenced when Sherlock pushes a CIA agent out the window for hurting her. She is also one of the three targets Moriarty threatened to kill. Martha is an Aramaic name meaning ‘lady.’
