Tiago comes from the Hebrew name Jacó (Jacob). Once it travelled to Portugal, Jacob turned into Ya’acov and then Iago. When the word Santo (‘saint’ in English) was put together, the name Santiago appeared. Tiago has become popular in the Iberian peninsula. Tiago Mendes is a famous footballer who has played for Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
