Top Baby Names in the US 2016

The top baby names in the United States has been revealed in a new set of data released by the Social Security Administration, along with information about the rising and dropping popularity of certain names.

Once again, popular culture has played a huge part in influencing baby name choices and it seems as if “Star Wars” was particularly in vogue this year – the boy’s name Kylo has made the biggest jump in popularity, going from being 3,269th on last year’s list to 901st on this year’s list. This is no doubt inspired by the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” villain Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver.

As for girls, the name Kehlani has shot up through the rank, going from 3,359th place to 872nd. This is attributed to R&B singer Kehlani Parrish, whose debut album was released in January.

Other names that shot up in popularity include Creed, Benicio, Adonis and Fox for boys and Royalty, Saoirse, Ophelia and Aitana for girls.

On the flip side, two names that have fallen out of favour are Caitlin and Donald. This comes after Olympian Bruce Jenner announced that she is now living as a transgendered woman called Caitlin. The name fell from 609th last year to 1151st. Donald, obviously influenced by the current US president, fell 45 spots to 488th.

As for the top ten names, Noah and Emma dominate the first places – Noah has been the top boys name for four years in a row and this is the first time Emma is the most popular girls name.
